Theater am Kornmarkt
The State Theatre in Bregenz plays a significant role in the cultural happenings of Vorarlberg’s state capital. The repertoire ranges from classics to debut performances. The theatre, as a place of imagination, stories and emotions, focuses consciously on traditional and contemporary theatre art, thus finding its recognition in the cultural landscape of the Lake Constance region.
Historical naming
Once known as “Vorarlberger Landesbühne” (Vorarlberg State Stage), it soon changed its name to “Vorarlberger Landestheater” (Vorarlberg State Theatre), then to “Theater für Vorarlberg” (Theatre for Vorarlberg) before being called “Theater für Vorarlberg Bregenz” (Theatre for Vorarlberg Bregenz) from 1999 – and today it receives its visitors as “Theater am Kornmarkt – Vorarlberger Landestheater Bregenz” (Theatre on the Kornmarkt – Vorarlberg State Theatre Bregenz).
Founded in 1945, the repertoire includes up to 15 premieres per year. In addition, since 1990 an opera has been produced each season in cooperation with the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra. Depending on the size of the work, it can be seen at the Theater am Kornmarkt or at the Bregenz Festival House. The concept of interdisciplinary artistic collaboration in various theatre projects has brought the theatre considerable attention on a cross-regional basis.
