Reading in the City
Ready, set, read! StadtLesen transforms the Lake Promenade of Bregenz into a cosy oasis for reading, with more than 3,000 books of all genres along with comfortable furniture perfect for curling up in. With free entry, endless browsing pleasure awaits you in the open air…
Set right in the centre of your city, StadtLesen provides an escape from your everyday life, promising an immersion into different worlds, minds and thoughts. Over eight successful years, Reading in the City has brought relaxed reading pleasure, endless leisure moments, and great memories to locals and visitors of the city. “We want to show that reading is pure pleasure,” Sebastian Mettler, founder of StadtLesen says. “Reading doesn’t bring a new world into your mind, it IS a world in your mind, individually created. I hope for an exciting journey in their mind for every visitor to StadtLesen!”
The reading festival has seen great success, starting off in 2009 with nine Austrian partner cities. StadtLesen now tours through four European countries. 1.4million visitors were taken on an unforgettable reading journey last year, and now 225 cities have been nominated to become the reading cities in 2017. 26 have been selected, including Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Salzburg, St. Gallen, Wolfsburg, Trier, Stuttgart and Freiburg im Breisgau.
The Lake Promenade will be transformed into a community reading room once more from Thursday 5 August to Sunday 8 August 2021. Browse through a wide range of books from the current catalogues of the best-known publishing houses at the “reading towers”, select a cosy seat, and fall into the world of literature. Warm blankets are provided for chilly reading evenings, and umbrellas provide shade for sunny day reading sessions. At the Readers’ Corner, all are welcome to try their reading-out-loud skills from their own writing.
StadtLesen is supported by the Austrian UNESCO Commission.
