The location is unique. A crystal-clear lake, snow-covered mountains in the background, sapgreen surroundings and a historic island with incomparable charm in the middle.
Lindau’s Old Town is located on an approximately 70 ha-large island in Lake Constance. With its centuries-old buildings, lively squares and picturesque lanes, it emits an almost Mediterranean flair. The impressive panorama of the Alps and Lake Constance opens up behind the widely-known port entry with the Bavarian lion and the white lighthouse.
You are best to explore Lindau’s Old Town on one of the regular town tours. With well-founded knowledge and little anecdotes, Lindau’s town tour guides accompany you on a journey in time through the culture, history, tradition and life of the island and garden town. No registration is required for any of the regular town tours.
Lindau culture and events
Lindau offers outstanding cultural opportunities. The town museum (the “Cavazzen”) at the Marktplatz is located in one of the most beautiful baroque middle-class houses and attracts with high-calibre, changing art exhibitions (including Pablo Picasso 2011, Marc Chagall 2012, Joan Miró 2013, Henri Matisse 2014, Emil Nolde 2015, Pablo Picasso 2016). The Lindau town theatre not only plays host to renowned plays and ensembles, but also houses the unique, cross-regionally renowned Lindau Marionette Opera.
With the island location, it is not surprising that many festivals and events take place beside or on the water. For instance, Lindau’s port Christmas, with its atmospheric lighting and festive atmosphere right by the port, has developed into an event highlight that attracts several thousand visitors each year.
